Plant growth poor, but filament algae do well. Eggs laid on algae, so just remove algae to fresh tank and watch fry emerge. Keep at ambient temperature, no need to heat, seem to hibernate or become inactive in winter, beleived to be necessary for successful breeding. Eat algae but grow best on live food like brine shrimp.
