Location code: Guinea CI 97-1 | | Water conditions: Moderately soft and acidic | Water temperature: 20-23oC | | Disposition: Active, but not aggresive | Community tank?: Doubtful, only with VERY calm fish | | Spawning Method: Spawning Mops | Breeding problems: Poor fry survival rate | | Sex ratio: Somewhat male heavy | Breeding difficulty: Easy | | Sucess: Average | Years Experience: | | Other Comments: Fry are very small and need to feed on infusoria for 1 - 2 weeks. Egg production slows down at lower temperatures <20C and stops at 18C. Best egg production at 24-26C. Tendency to eat some eggs. Young fish tend to produce infertile eggs for a while before getting the hang of it. | | Date this record created: 17th December 2002 | Breeding date: | | Breeder: David Baker | Location: Maidenhead UK |

Location code: Abuko | | Water conditions: Very soft and acidic | Water temperature: 24-27oC | | Disposition: Slightly timid | Community tank?: Doubtful, only with VERY calm fish | | Spawning Method: Long term (fry appear with adults) | Breeding problems: none | | Sex ratio: Somewhat female heavy | Breeding difficulty: Easy | | Sucess: Average | Years Experience: 2 | | Other Comments: Water pH6, low hardness. Quite prolific, particularly at warmer temperatures. I now keep these on the top row of tanks in my fishroom at 25C.
Will spawn on mops, but I now leave them with a thin layer of peat fibre and a good growth of java moss. The fry grow on with the parents without problems.
Eggs are small, and fry fatalities will occur if infusoria is not available as I find that not all newly hatched fish will accept Artemia nauplii. This is another reason why I leave the fry with the adults in an 18"x12"x12" tank which supports sufficient minute organsims to get them through the first few days until they will accept the brine shrimp. | | Date this record created: 14th August 2002 | Breeding date: 14th August 2002 | | Breeder: Ian Allcroft BKA 157-06 | Location: Harrogate, North Yorkshire |
