Location code:
Guinea CI 97-1
Water conditions: Moderately soft and acidic Water temperature: 20-23oC
Disposition: Active, but not aggresive Community tank?: Doubtful, only with VERY calm fish
Spawning Method: Spawning MopsBreeding problems:
Poor fry survival rate
Sex ratio: Somewhat male heavyBreeding difficulty: Easy

Other Comments: Fry are very small and need to feed on infusoria for 1 - 2 weeks. Egg production slows down at lower temperatures <20C and stops at 18C. Best egg production at 24-26C. Tendency to eat some eggs. Young fish tend to produce infertile eggs for a while before getting the hang of it.

Other Comments: Water pH6, low hardness. Quite prolific, particularly at warmer temperatures. I now keep these on the top row of tanks in my fishroom at 25C. Will spawn on mops, but I now leave them with a thin layer of peat fibre and a good growth of java moss. The fry grow on with the parents without problems. Eggs are small, and fry fatalities will occur if infusoria is not available as I find that not all newly hatched fish will accept Artemia nauplii. This is another reason why I leave the fry with the adults in an 18"x12"x12" tank which supports sufficient minute organsims to get them through the first few days until they will accept the brine shrimp.
