Aphyosemion herzogi inhabits rainforest streams in west Africa. As such it likes a not-too-bright tank, with some shading and preferably a dark substrate.

Other Comments: A number of separate attempts at spawning since Nov 2003 & since Jan 2004 though these not documented. All sucessful. Weekly egg collection varied between 7 & 45. Best temp about 68-70F.Eggs laid in java moss & collected weekly for either water or on damp peat.Hatch at warmer temps as early as 7 days but some belly sliders. 20 days at 70F best.Few losses at egg or fry stages. Growth slow at first. Brine shrimps taken on hatching.Not difficult fish.
