Before description in 2007, this large Fundulopanchax was circulating amongst aquarists as Fundulopanchax sp. Korup National Park.

It was collected, initially, by Andre Kamdem Toham, from moderately cool (21-24 degrees C) shallow shaded rainforest streams and pools in the Korup National Park.
