Nothobranchius lucius comes from a small area in southern central Tanzania, between Ifakara and the Kilombero river ferry.

This Notho is a larger predatory species, that will happily eat small fish as well as typical live foods. Prey fish are typically swallowed whole!

Prior to 2009, it was distributed as N. sp aff melanospilis, but the species was then officially described as N. lucius, in respect of it's pike-like shape and predatory behaviour (lucius is the Latin word for pike). It would seem to be far more drab in colouration than other nothos. One distinguishing feature is the orange suborder, before the black edge in the caudal fin.

It is similar in size and colouration (both male and female) to the aforementioned N. melanosplis, (which replaces it to the east), and N. makondorum (which replaces it to the south).
