Nothobranchius kafuensis hails from swampland around the Kafue river, and upper Zambesi river in Zambia. The species varies significantly from locality to locality, primarily in the amount of orange vs blue colouration, but also in the thickness of the white and black tail stripes, and the patterns / colouration of the anal and dorsal fin - see pictures of some of this pattern variation below.

This species is most likely related to Nothobranchius capriviensis, occurring to the west of N. kafuensis, in the Caprivi strip of Namibia.

Breeding Report: Nothobranchius kafuensis
Water conditions: Neutral, 20-23oC
Spawning Method: Peat (or similar) spawning substrate
Sex ratio: Somewhat male heavy
Breeding difficulty: Average
Success: Fairly successful
Other Comments: Not a difficult fish to keep but needs some TLC. Young males may be a bit rough on the females. Some males mature very late (16 weeks!). Eggs eye-up long before being ready to hatch.

Spawning Method: Peat (or similar) spawning substrate
Sex ratio: Roughly equal
Breeding difficulty: Average
Success: Fairly successful

Spawning Method: Peat (or similar) spawning substrate
